In order to become a member, one must be an active candidate for at least 1 semester. This requires 60% or more attendance at meetings and a GPA of 3.0 or above.

The Strategies for Ecology Education, Diversity and Sustainability program (SEEDS) is the flagship award-winning education program of the Ecological Society of America. Its mission is to diversify and advance the ecology profession through opportunities that stimulate and nurture the interest of underrepresented students to participate, and to lead in ecology. The core SEEDS program components offer hands-on, engaging experiences with ecology that exhibit the relevance and applications of the science. Each experience also provides opportunities to interact with a diverse group of ecologists and other motivated students to both broaden and deepen students’ understanding of ecology and potential careers. Focused mainly at the undergraduate level, with extension services for communities, high schools, graduate students, and international collaborations, the SEEDS program promotes an ecology profession with wide representation to ensure environmental understanding and a sustainable future for all.

We serve FLC students and cover all news relevant on campus, in town, and in the broader Four Corners Region. We publish four print issues per year (two per semester) and regular content on our website and social media.

In addition to serving our readers, The Independent offers several benefits to our staff. Students gain active, real and applied experience while working with the Independent. Being on staff offers students a chance to develop professional skills and connections and a dynamic set of tools to apply in the professional industry. Students can participate as club members, or gain lower division and upper division course credit for enrolling in the practicum course. Students can gain experience in several different departments.
